Small Sprouts Giveaway Reminder

You need to post your total points on our Facebook page before 8am central time tommorow

2 Choices

Two Choices
What would you do?....you make the choice. Don't look for a punch line, there isn't one. Read it anyway. My question is: Would you have made the same choice?

At a fundraising dinner for a school that serves children with learning disabilities, the father of one of the students delivered a speech that would never be forgotten by all who attended. After extolling the school and its dedicated staff, he offered a question:

'When not interfered with by outside influences, everything nature does, is done with perfection.

Yet my son, Shay, cannot learn things as other children do. He cannot understand things as other children do.

Where is the natural order of things in my son?'

The audience was stilled by the query.
The father continued. 'I believe that when a child like Shay, who was mentally and physically disabled comes into the world, an opportunity to realize true human nature presents itself, and it comes in the way other people treat that child.'

Then he told the following story:
Shay and I had walked past a park where some boys Shay knew were playing baseball. Shay asked, 'Do you think they'll let me play?' I knew that most of the boys would not want someone like Shay on their team, but as a father I also understood that if my son were allowed to play, it would give him a much-needed sense of belonging and some confidence to be accepted by others in spite of his handicaps.

I approached one of the boys on the field and asked (not expecting much) if Shay could play. The boy looked around for guidance and said, 'We're losing by six runs and the game is in the eighth inning. I guess he can be on our team and we'll try to put him in to bat in the ninth inning.'

Shay struggled over to the team's bench and, with a broad smile, put on a team shirt. I watched with a small tear in my eye and warmth in my heart. The boys saw my joy at my son being accepted.

In the bottom of the eighth inning, Shay's team scored a few runs but was still behind by three.

In the top of the ninth inning, Shay put on a glove and played in the right field. Even though no hits came his way, he was obviously ecstatic just to be in the game and on the field, grinning from ear to ear as I waved to him from the stands.

In the bottom of the ninth inning, Shay's team scored again.

Now, with two outs and the bases loaded, the potential winning run was on base and Shay was scheduled to be next at bat.

At this juncture, do the others let Shay bat and give away their chance to win the game?

Surprisingly, Shay was given the bat. Everyone knew that a hit was all but impossible because Shay didn't even know how to hold the bat properly, much less connect with the ball.

However, as Shay stepped up to the plate, the pitcher, recognizing that the other team was putting winning aside for this moment in Shay's life, moved in a few steps to lob the ball in softly so Shay could at least make contact.

The first pitch came and Shay swung clumsily and missed. The pitcher again took a few steps forward to toss the ball softly towards Shay.

As the pitch came in, Shay swung at the ball and hit a slow ground ball right back to the pitcher. The game would now be over. The pitcher picked up the soft grounder and could have easily thrown the ball to the first baseman.

Shay would have been out and that would have been the end of the game. Instead, the pitcher threw the ball right over the first baseman's head, out of reach of all team mates. Everyone from the stands and both teams started yelling, 'Shay, run to first!

Run to first!'

Never in his life had Shay ever run that far, but he made it to first base. He scampered down the baseline, wide-eyed and startled. Everyone yelled, 'Run to second, run to second!'

Catching his breath, Shay awkwardly ran towards second, gleaming and struggling to make it to the base.

By the time Shay rounded towards second base, the right fielder had the ball. The smallest guy on their team who now had his first chance to be the hero for his team.

He could have thrown the ball to the second-baseman for the tag, but he understood the pitcher's intentions so he, too, intentionally threw the ball high and far over the third-baseman's head.

Shay ran toward third base deliriously as the runners ahead of him circled the bases toward home. All were screaming, 'Shay, Shay, Shay, all the Way Shay'

Shay reached third base because the opposing shortstop ran to help him by turning him in the direction of third base, and shouted, 'Run to third!

Shay, run to third!'

As Shay rounded third, the boys from both teams, and the spectators, were on their feet screaming, 'Shay, run home! Run home!'

Shay ran to home, stepped on the plate, and was cheered as the hero who hit the grand slam and won the game for his team

'That day', said the father softly with tears now rolling down his face, 'the boys from both teams helped bring a piece of true love and humanity into this world'.

Shay didn't make it to another summer. He died that winter, having never forgotten being the hero and making me so happy, and coming home and seeing his Mother tearfully embrace her little hero of the day !

AND NOW A LITTLE FOOT NOTE TO THIS STORY:

We all send thousands of jokes through the e-mail without a second thought, but when it comes to sending messages about life choices, people hesitate.

The crude, vulgar, and often obscene pass freely through cyberspace, but public discussion about decency is too often suppressed in our schools and workplaces.

If you're thinking about forwarding this message, chances are that you're probably sorting out the people in your address book who aren't the 'appropriate' ones to receive this type of message Well, the person who sent you this believes that we all can make a difference.

We all have thousands of opportunities every single day to help realize the 'natural order of things.
So many seemingly trivial interactions between two people present us with a choice:

Do we pass along a little spark of love and humanity or do we pass up those opportunities and leave the world a little bit colder in the process?

A wise man once said every society is judged by how it treats it's least fortunate amongst them.

You now have two choices:

1. Delete

2. Forward

May your day, be a Shay Day.

Why Do I Have To Learn Math?

Have you ever heard that question from your child? Why do I have to learn Math? When will I ever use this stuff?

Is math easier for boys than girls? You can google all the research and there appears to be evidence on both sides. I can tell you from my experience with 3 boys that this is an area they all excel in along with science. I can tell you that my friends that have girls tell me this is an area their girls struggle in. I struggled in math at school and I know I asked my mom that question. Why do I have to learn math?

We homeschool and my 11 year old son, Joseph, asked me this question the other day. He does not struggle in math, but sometimes he would just rather play than work. I explained to Kevin then and Joseph now that they have no idea what they will grow up to do and when they might need it. Example being, Kevin, who is in the Navy, is now going to school to be a Seabee and working for his degree in structural engineering. They need alot of math to do that job.

I told Joseph to look at what I do. I started a business from items that I love to sew which takes alot of math, especially if you make your own patterns. When I am working on a design, I have shapes floating in my head as I calculate how to put them together. That is math, geometry, etc., I was making myself this type of a wrap skirt the other day and I had to resort to mathmatical calculations to figure it out. When you sew you use: inches, feet, yards, meters, etc., Think about how much math you use to run your households everyday.

I would love to hear from some of you how you help your children with there studies and any wisdom you have about doing this.

•If someone in a Lowe's store offers you assistance and they don't work there, you may live in Texas;
•If you've worn shorts and a parka at the same time, you may live in Texas;
•If you've had a lengthy telephone conversation with someone who dialed a wrong number, you may live in Texas;

How to keep your PC clean and quick~Frugal Mompreneur Tip

What you don't know can hurt you - big time - when it comes to what's hiding in your PC. From "naturally" occurring registry errors to more insidious threats like spyware, hidden problems can slow your computer performance to a crawl or even cause it to crash.

A little proactive maintenance, however, can go a long way towards preventing problems. Keeping your PC "clean" and running at its best is as simple as establishing a routine maintenance schedule and using the right kinds of software to address the most common problems. The good news is, many of these maintenance tasks can be automated, thanks to software developers who understand how busy the average PC user is - and how baffling trouble-shooting can be.

Here are three key "cleaning" tasks that you should perform on a regular basis (at least once a week):

Run a registry cleaner

If your computer is slower now than when you first bought it, the problem may be registry errors. Installing and removing software, playing online games, application crashes and upgrades of software problems can all create "natural" errors in your PC's registry. They accumulate over time and the more errors you have, the higher the likelihood that you'll experience trouble.

To protect your system, install a one-click tool called ARO 2011. The software ferrets out and corrects registry errors. Manufacturer Sammsoft offers free trials of ARO 2011 so people can check their systems for errors. ARO has been downloaded by more than 30 million times worldwide. Go to www.Sammsoft.com to download your free trial.

Once the download is complete, just click "run" to install ARO 2011. The program will scan and diagnose your PC's registry, tell you how many errors it found and then fix the first 100 errors for free. If you like the trial version, you can upgrade to the full unlimited commercial system for just $29.95. Industry watcher Softarea51 recently gave the software 5 stars, calling it "a remarkable product, best of breed in its class, rising above its competitors by its innovative approach."

Out spyware

Did you know that 61 percent of PCs have spyware on them? And of those infected, 92 percent of users didn't know spyware was present on their computers, according to a poll by AOL and the National Cyber-Security Alliance.

Spyware - software that gets installed on your computer without your knowledge or consent - is considered a serious security threat. Not only can spyware collect information about your Internet usage, it can install additional software, hijack your browser, change your computer settings and slow down your computer performance.

Scan for spyware daily if you are on the Internet often and download frequently. Many companies offer completely free anti-spyware software for download.

Be vigilant to viruses

With so many other computer threats cropping up, it may be easy to overlook virus protection. But viruses continue to be a major threat to computer security, costing consumers and companies billions of dollars worldwide each year to prevent virus transmission and clean up after infection.

The best defense is a good offense when it comes to computer viruses. Subscribe to a virus protection software that provides constant updates since new viruses emerge and old ones evolve into new forms every day. Scan for new viruses at least once a week - more frequently if you are a heavy Internet user or receive large volumes of unsolicited e-mail.

Don't wait until it's too late ... go to www.Sammsoft.com to download your free trial. Once the download is complete, just click "run" to install ARO 2011. The program will scan and diagnose your PC's registry, tell you how many errors it found and then fix the first 100 errors for free. If you like the trial version, you can upgrade to the full unlimited commercial system for just $29.95.

The Newest Dangerous Sweetener to Hit Your Food Shelves...

Since 2002 an artificial sweetener called neotame has been approved for use in food and drink products around the world, although so far its use appears to be very limited.

Neotame is a chemical derivative of aspartame, and judging by the chemicals used in its manufacturing, it appears even more toxic than aspartame, although the proponents of neotame claim that increased toxicity is not a concern, because less of it is needed to achieve the desired effect.

Neotame is bad science brought to you by the Monsanto Company.

If Monsano truly had nothing to fear with either of these artificial chemical sweeteners, they would have funded rigorous independent testing for safety. To date they have not, and they won't, because virtually every independent analysis of aspartame not conducted by Monsanto partners has revealed a long list of disturbing side effects, mostly neurological in nature.

Monsanto also has now sold the NutraSweet Company to someone else, but the approval of neotame came under Monsanto's ownership, and was most likely a result of Monsanto's cozy relationship with the FDA. More about that in a minute.

My recommendation for neotame is the same as that for aspartame, which is: it should be avoided if you care about your health.

Why is Neotame Dangerous?
Hopefully by now you are aware of the dangers of aspartame.

But as if aspartame wasn't bad enough, NutraSweet (a Monsanto subsidiary at the time of neotame's approval) "improved" the aspartame formula, making neotame 7,000-13,000 times sweeter than sugar (sucrose) and 30-60 times sweeter than aspartame.

How did they do this?

In 1998, Monsanto applied for FDA approval for neotame, "based on the aspartame formula" with one critical addition: 3-dimethylbutyl, which just happens to be listed on the EPA's most hazardous chemical list.

So not only is neotame potentially more devastating to your health than aspartame, it is also approved for use in a wider array of food products, including baked goods, because it is more stable at higher temperatures.

What is 3-Dimethylbutyl?

Neotame is manufactured by combining aspartame with 3,3-dimethylbutyraldehyd, which was added to block enzymes that break the peptide bond between aspartic acid and phenylalanine, thereby reducing the availability of phenylalanine.

This eliminates the need for a warning on labels directed at people who cannot properly metabolize phenylalanine.

However, 3,3-Dimethylbutyraldehyde is categorized as both highly flammable and an irritant, and carries risk statements for handling including irritating to skin, eyes and respiratory system.

In other words, the NutraSweet company assures you that neotame is perfectly safe, while at the same time they manufacture neotame through a chemical reaction between aspartame and a substance that is highly flammable and a skin, eye and respiratory irritant (that must be handled with extreme caution by anyone involved in the manufacturing process).
Does this sound like something you want to put into your body?

Why are These Chemicals Approved for Human Consumption?

Many people actually consider the FDA to be a "subsidiary" of the Monsanto Company. It sounds impossible, but when you look at all the Monsanto executives who have gone through the revolving door between private industry and government oversight, a truly disturbing picture emerges of the foxes guarding the henhouse..

The FDA is packed by pro-business, pro-corporation advocates who often have massive conflicts of interest when it comes to protecting the health of the public.

In fact, the revolving door between private industry and government oversight agencies is so well established these days, it has become business as usual to read about scandal, conflicts of interest and blatant pro-industry bias, even when it flies in the face of science or the law.

A few examples include:

•FDA Commissioner Margaret Hamburg, a former dental amalgam company executive, helped subvert a federal judge's order to label mercury fillings as a hazard to children and pregnant women.

•The FDA's top medical-device regulator, Daniel Schultz, resigned following internal dissent over decisions that his critics said were too friendly to industry.

•Janet Woodcock, the director of the FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, was accused of a massive conflict of interest stemming from an ethics complaint filed by Amphastar Pharmaceuticals Inc.

•The agency's list of corruptions and collusions is now a mile long. And each piece of new legislation aimed to improve its function seems to do just the opposite—making the FDA even more dependent upon financial support by Big Pharma.

Why Aspartame and Neotame are NOT a Dieters Best Friend

On of the biggest marketing and PR tactics for man-made chemical sweeteners has been the claim that they help in the battle against obesity. Folks, they don't. They never have and they never will.

The research and the epidemiologic data suggest the opposite is true, and that artificial sweeteners such as aspartame and neotame tend to lead to weight gain. As I've often said, there's more to weight gain or weight loss than mere calorie intake.

One reason for aspartame and neotame's potential to cause weight gain is because phenylalanine and aspartic acid – the two amino acids that make up 90 percent of aspartame and are also present in neotame -- are known to rapidly stimulate the release of insulin and leptin; two hormones that are intricately involved with satiety and fat storage.

Insulin and leptin are also the primary hormones that regulate your metabolism.

So although you're not ingesting calories in the form of sugar, aspartame and neotame can still raise your insulin and leptin levels. Elevated insulin and leptin levels, in turn, are two of the driving forces behind obesity, diabetes, and a number of our current chronic disease epidemics.

Over time, if your body is exposed to too much leptin, it will become resistant to it, just as your body can become resistant to insulin, and once that happens, your body can no longer "hear" the hormonal messages instructing your body to stop eating, burn fat, and maintain good sensitivity to sweet tastes in your taste buds.

What happens then?

You remain hungry; you crave sweets, and your body stores more fat.

Leptin-resistance also causes an increase in visceral fat, sending you on a vicious cycle of hunger, fat storage and an increased risk of heart disease, diabetes, metabolic syndrome and more.

The 2 Most Important Cleaning Supplies In Your Home (Hint: They're Not What You Think)

Keeping a clean and organized home is essential to your efficiency, if not your sanity!

Your living space — whether it’s a studio apartment you share with a roommate, or a large estate that you have to yourself — serves as the foundation from which you build your many successes in life. The stronger your foundation, the stronger your successes.

Keeping your living space clean and organized is easier said than done. It helps to have the right tools. If you have the right tools, you’ll use them. If you don’t, you’ll put off cleaning and organizing, and this will, in turn, impact every area of your life.

Among cleaning tools, two are particularly important to you. And they’re probably not what you think! Here’s a hint: it’s all about gravity. (Really.)

Dust and dirt follow the law of gravity — eventually, everything undesirable will find its way down.

As particles become smaller and smaller, they will become airborne with the slightest breeze or movement, and float still further down again. This means, that you must look to your floors and carpets. That’s where every thing unappealing ends up (and if I told you what dust really is, you might become disgusted and stop reading, so I’ll spare you the gory details. I also won’t tell you what microorganisms and substances we drag into our home from the outside world on the soles of our shoes!).

I encourage you to invest in these two quality tools:

#1 A Pair of Kneepads.

That’s right, you heard me correctly. Every home should have a pair of good knee pads tucked away somewhere and readily available.

Here’s the deal: I have all kinds of state-of-the-art cleaning tools and natural solvents, but still — sometimes I feel like I’m just pushing the dirt around. Over the years, I’ve found that the best way to get something done, is to get down on my hands and knees and put some ‘elbow grease’ into it! Hence, my belief in knee pads.

I like the feeling of satisfaction from doing a job well and using the right tools. Whether you’re weeding the garden, removing a motor oil spill from the garage, or making your kitchen floor shine, a good pair of pads can make all the difference on your knees — and it helps make the task a lot more enjoyable.

Personally, I like the foam ones. They’re light but durable (I’ve had the same pair for many years). And since most brands sell for under 9 bucks, they’re a pretty good value, too.

The thing about mops is, they really just move the dirt from one place to another. I do use mops in my home for in-between cleanings, but most of the time I find it’s more effective to just pop on the knee pads and go for a good old-fashioned scrubbing, using rubber gloves, microfiber cloths, and a bucket with hot, soapy water. This may sound corny, but I swear to you the feeling of satisfaction after this particular chore is… empowering!

#2 An Excellent Vacuum.

I had a funny conversation recently with a colleague who was telling a light-hearted story about his bride who had purchased a vacuum cleaner that he thought was absurdly expensive. I met his gaze directly and offered this: “she was absolutely right.”

If the vacuum is under a good warranty and it’s of exceptional quality, then it will last for years and years. It’s all about the suction power. You want a vacuum that will pull up the dust, dirt, and hair from your furniture, your rugs, and every crevice in your home.

By the way, my colleague just rolled his eyes and replied “you two are made for each other!”

At our home, I use a special industrial-strength backpack vacuum (see photo, right). It looks like a jet-pack! I even use it outdoors on the patio. It’s super, super strong and can suck up anything. But you don’t need a backpack vacuum — any good upright is fine — but do invest in a good one. If your upright doesn’t have a powerful hose attachment, than you’ll need an additional mini-handheld vacuum. But it had better be strong!

What am I missing? Is there a particular tool that’s been a lifesaver for keeping your home tidy and neatly arranged? I invite you to share your comments in the section provided below.

What's the best day to buy a plane ticket?~Frugal Mompreneur

You may have your favorite travel site, but often when you book matters more than which online agency you use.

Tuesday at 3 p.m. Eastern is when airfares are their lowest on average, according to FareCompare, which gathers fare data from the same sources that major travel agencies use.

But FareCompare is the only company that makes such a specific claim about the best time to shop for fares. It's hard to check independently.

One voice of dissent is Airfarewatchdog, which scours travel databases for for flights and then fetches special sales that the major online travel sites miss. The site says there is no special hour to book plane tickets.

Now The Wall Street Journal has weighed into the mix, reporting a vaguer claim that Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday are generally the best days to buy fares.

One of its sources is Bob Harrell, who tracks fares for his consulting firm Harrell Associates. Airlines tend to make the bulk of their promotional fares available on Sunday night and Monday, says Harrell, and they tend to hike their fares at the end of the week.

Harrell did a study of the past 90 days of fare changes for the Wall Street Journal, and found that prices for tickets tend to drop mid-week.

The Journal also used Kayak to do a daily check of fares in 10 markets for the past two weeks. It again found that mid-week prices were lowest.

So, what to make of all this? It seems best to buy your tickets in the middle of the week.

That said, the biggest factor on the price of your ticket can be how far in advance you purchase your ticket. Early-bird buyers get the best fares. Buy a month or two in advance if you can. (See our earlier post: "For the lowest airfare, study says book eight weeks in advance.")

Another tip: Use the fare prediction tools at Bing Travel and FareCompare to see if you should buy now or wait later for specific itinerary, based on historical data
