FRUGAL TIP CONTEST TIP FROM TJ AND AMY

Amy is a long time faithful Small Sprouts blog follower! Her frugal tip is the Food Nanny & this is what Amy said " I love the food nanny, she cut my grocery shopping in half! I Plan meals according to what is on sale that week and I shop and plan meals 2 weeks in advanced so I don't overbuy! I also use coupons and watch for rebates as well."

TO PLACE YOUR VOTE FOR AMY, JUST LEAVE A COMMENT BELOW THIS POST, YOU WILL HAVE UNTIL MIDNIGHT WEDNESDAY TO VOTE~

Here is the Food Nanny story

Everyone across this vast world has one thing in common and that is dinnertime. I want to bring more families home for dinner!

When my husband and I were raising our children, our consistent family dinnertime was the glue that kept our family close. By sharing this meal together each night, we were able to form a united family that was loyal toward one another, that was aware of one another's needs, and that shared each other's joys and tears.

Through the years, I have been able to help neighbors and friends find their way to a consistent family dinnertime. Teaching others how to prepare a meaningful dinner meal became a passion for me and now, with my upcoming book, The Food Nanny Rescues Dinner, that help will be available to everyone!

Each person deserves a meaninful dinnertime - even if you're cooking only for yourself, the aromas of dinner coming from your kitchen can permeate your home every night. I believe this is the most important thing you can do for yourself and your family each day. http://thefoodnanny.org/

Frugal Ways To Save At Least $100.00 a Month~Frugal Mompreneur

Imagine spending just $20 a year -- or less -- for yearly telephone service. Or, perhaps you'd be interested in shaving 15 percent off your monthly utility bills. Two frugal experts say you can do it.

Everyone looks for simple ways to save, especially in today's tumultuous economy. Bankrate asked two frugal bloggers to share their thoughts on some nearly effortless ways to hang on to your hard-earned green.

If you take their advice to heart, you'll likely save at least $100 a month around the house.

Rethink Your Phone Service

Fed up with expensive telephone bills? Jonni McCoy, author of the Miserly Moms website, recommends switching to an alternative phone service like magicJack or Skype.

Such services allow you to make local and long-distance calls for a fraction of the price of traditional phone service. For instance, magicJack customers can get phone service for as little as $19.95 a year, while Skype calls are free to other Skype users.

"These are good alternatives to (traditional) phone service, and they include long distance, so no extra card is needed," McCoy says.
Customers nervous about dropping their traditional phone carrier have other options for saving money.

For example, consider canceling long-distance service from your phone carrier and using calling cards instead, says Susan Palmquist, creator of money blog The Budget Smart Girl's Guide to the Universe.

Need a second phone line? In this case, a service like magicJack works well, because it's "much cheaper than adding a second line to your existing phone account," Palmquist says.

When it comes to your monthly cell phone bill, save money by cutting down on your minutes and switching to a more basic plan. Palmquist recommends switching to a pay-as-you-go cell phone.

Cut Down on Electricity

Each month, utility bills silently drain a little more cash from your wallet, preventing you from building a sizable emergency fund or retirement nest egg.

There are several ways to trim these bills. Three quick and painless ways to save include: switching to compact fluorescent light bulbs (which are more energy-efficient than standard light bulbs) lowering the temperature on your hot water heater (130 degrees Fahrenheit is enough to kill germs) and drying your clothing on a clothesline or rack whenever possible.

McCoy and Palmquist also recommend signing up for any incentive or rebate programs offered by the local utility company.

With these programs, you typically agree to allow the power company to briefly shut off certain appliances when energy demand is particularly high. In return, you get a credit on your monthly bill.

For example, customers who participate in Florida Power & Light's On Call Savings Program allow FPL to install a small device on their water heater and air conditioner compressor. This allows the utility company to periodically borrow electricity for 15 minutes or so.

Palmquist -- who lives in Minneapolis and gets her power from Xcel Energy -- does this and gets a 15 percent discount on her bills.

Conserve Water

Are you drowning in monthly water bills? Palmquist and McCoy recommend money-saving options such as washing all clothing in cold water.

"I use cold water to wash clothes, and recently read that using the delicate cycle also saves water, too," Palmquist says.

In some cases, saving cash actually goes hand in hand with superior performance, Palmquist says.

"We installed a low-flow shower head in the main bathroom and find it not only saves water, but the flow is better than the old one," she says.

Of course, another "no-brainer" way to save is simply to use appliances less frequently. Wait until you have a full load before running the washing machine, dryer or dishwasher.
Don't overlook water-saving tips for outside the home. Palmquist plans to invest in a rain barrel for outside watering next year. Meanwhile, McCoy recommends making changes to landscaping "so there is less lawn to water."

Bundle or Drop Cable and Internet

McCoy suggests saving money by bundling cable and Internet services. Palmquist agrees, and recently switched to an "economy package" for her TV service.

However, Palmquist says it's important to look before you leap into bundling.

"Sometimes it's more expensive and they can lock you into a two-year contract, so check out everything first," she says.

If you're really gung-ho about saving, simply drop cable altogether. Perhaps you can watch your favorite TV shows for free on an Internet site such as Hulu.com.

Or, maybe it's time to simply give up those expensive TV habits and think about the priorities that really matter to you.

"My main advice is to think about wants and needs," Palmquist says. "Many of us think something's a necessity when really it's just a want."

LAST MINUTE THANKSGIVING PLACEMAT~FRUGAL MOMPRENEUR

You're probably running around like a chicken (or perhaps a turkey) with its head cut off, trying to get everything done in time for Thanksgiving. And you're probably thinking "Who has time for sewing?" That's why I've gathered up the quickest, easiest last minute Thanksgiving sewing project to put the finishing touches on your holiday table. Make this Last Minute Kids' Thanksgiving Placemat for the kids' table.
Happy turkey day!

This project can be done on the machine or by hand.

Materials Needed:

This makes enough for 3 placemats.

½ yard dark red felt (72” wide)
¼ yard dark brown felt (72” wide)
3 9” x 12” pieces of tan felt
Remnants of black, red, and gold felt
Coordinating thread
Turkey Placemat Pattern (PDF)

Instructions:

Cut out the following pieces:

Feathers A: Cut one on fold in dark red felt
Feathers B: Cut one on fold in dark brown felt
Body: Cut one on fold in tan felt
Eyes: Cut two in black felt
Beak: Cut one in gold felt
Wattle: Cut one in red (or dark red) felt
Place Feathers A and Feathers B together centering B in A, making sure that the bottom straight edges line up. Pin together. Sew from edge of bumps on feathers down to center of turkey leaving pockets in the feathers. (See diagram). Sew along bottom straight edge also. Set aside.

Sew beak, wattle and eyes on body.
Sew body onto Feathers (A and B) in the center, lining up straight edges on the bottom. You’re done! Place on the table with knife, spoon, and fork in the pockets and a plate on top. Happy Thanksgiving! I hope you enjoy this.

Just A Rest From The Kids

My Mom forwarded this to me. I thought this was a cute story. I have no idea if it is true but it makes for nice reading for the start of the week.

A Rest From The Kids

An older, tired-looking dog wandered into my yard; I could tell
from his collar and well-fed belly that he had a home and was
well taken care of.

He calmly came over to me, I gave him a few pats on his head;
he then followed me into my house, slowly walked down the
hall, curled up in the corner and fell asleep.

An hour later, he went to the door, and I let him out.

The next day he was back, greeted me in my yard,
walked inside and resumed his spot in the hall and again slept for about an hour.
This continued off and on for several weeks.

Curious I pinned a note to his collar:
‘I would like to find out who the owner of this wonderful sweet dog is and ask
if you are aware that almost every afternoon your dog comes to my house for a nap.’

The next day he arrived for his nap, with a different note pinned to his collar:
‘He lives in a home with 6 children, 2 under the age of 3 -
he’s trying to catch up on his sleep.
Can I come with him tomorrow?’

CDC and ADA Now Advise to Avoid Using Fluoride

A new study in the Journal of the American Dental Association finds once again that, contrary to what most people have been told, fluoride is actually bad for teeth.

Exposure to high levels of fluoride results in a condition known as fluorosis, in which tooth enamel becomes discolored. The condition can eventually lead to badly damaged teeth. The new study found that fluoride intake during a child's first few years of life is significantly associated with fluorosis, and warned against using fluoridated water in infant formula.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is of a similar opinion. According to their website:

"Recent evidence suggests that mixing powdered or liquid infant formula concentrate with fluoridated water on a regular basis may increase the chance of a child developing ... enamel fluorosis."

Make Sure Your Children are Not Exposed to Fluoride

One of dentist Bill Osmunson's main concerns is water fluoridation for infants. The ADA and the CDC now both recommend that infants NOT receive fluoridated water for drinking, nor for making their formula, as fluoridated water contains 250 times more fluoride than mother's milk.

"We shouldn't fluoridate water and harm our most vulnerable," Dr. Osmunson says.

It is my strong belief and recommendation to avoid giving your children fluoridated water.

Unfortunately, the only way to ensure your water is pure enough to drink is by installing ahigh quality water filtration system in your house, such as a reverse osmosis filter that can filter out much of the fluoride and other dangerous water contaminants like disinfection byproducts (DBPs).

Remember that most bottled water also typically contains fluoride, even though it's not stated on the label, and whatever you do, avoid using "nursery water," which is fluoridated water sold specifically for infants.

Fluoride in your drinking water is one more reason why breastfeeding your infant is so essential. Nature has kept breast milk virtually fluoride-free for a reason.

If you are unable to breastfeed and are instead using formula, make sure the water you use is fluoride-free. Again, for now the best way you can provide pure, fluoride-free water to your family is by using a reverse osmosis filter, which you can install in your home.

Even better, if you are unable to breastfeed use this recipe to make homemade infant formula using raw milk and no water at all.

Keep in mind also that if you are a pregnant woman it is equally important for your water to be fluoride-free, as this chemical can harm your developing fetus.

The Ultimate Solution is to Get Fluoride Out of Tap Water

Even though the ADA and the CDC have issued warnings that parents not use fluoridated tap water to make infant formula, neither of them has openly informed the public!

So there are millions of parents out there using tap water to make up formula, oblivious of the fact that the agencies that promote fluoridation in this country have issued a specific warning against using fluoridated water for this purpose.

Not only that, but by fluoridating the municipal water supply you doom many low-income families to fail to protect their young children from this dangerous drug, even if they have this information, as they simply don't have the resources to install a reverse osmosis system.

This is why the only real solution is to stop the archaic practice of water fluoridation in the United States.

The Fluoride Action Network is an absolutely phenomenal resource for further education, and they're doing much to pressure the US government for change. We will be working together to devise a complete game plan to tackle this issue head on. Once we reach the tipping point, which may be as little as 5 percent of the population, we will be able to reverse the policies of water fluoridation.

Our strategy will begin with addressing Canada, because 60 percent of Canada is already un-fluoridated. If we can get the rest of Canada to stop fluoridating their water, we believe the U.S. will be forced to follow.

You can visit http://www.fluoridealert.org/  for the most recent updates and progress, as well as tips on how you can get involved and take action in this important cause.

In addition, I highly recommend getting a copy of Dr. Connett's new book, The Case Against Fluoride, for more information on the bad science and political agendas that got this toxic chemical in our drinking water and is, at least for now, keeping it there.

SMALL SPROUTS OUTREACH & MISSION WORK

Our family has now been living in the Yucatan of Mexico for almost 5 months. Last month I wrote a post about the challenges faced by the women of the Yucatan. In response to that, I wanted to share with you our work here and thank all of you that donated to this cause.

Last month the ladies gathered for a 2 1/2 hour workshop and ministry time to the pregnant moms, moms wanting to be pregnant and new mothers. The wealthy class and the growing middle class here are becoming educated about the importance of good eating, vitamins and healthy living before, during and after pregnancy. They are also learning about the importance of the parents role in childhood development. The poorer class does not have access to this information or the products needed to carry this out.

So in response we are trying to help with supplies and education. To start October's meeting, Michelle made a game for the ladies that created a baby shower atmosphere. Michelle is super creative and put some hours into a really fun game for everyone to play.
About 35 ladies attended.

Llana led the meeting the rest of the way with a power point presentation she produced about the importance of taking care of yourself before, during and after pregnancy along with step by step development expectations for new babies. Llana is a native Meridian with a degree in childhood development that she earned at one of the Universities here in Merida. Llana explained the importance of taking vitamins before you are pregnant, especially Folic acid.

The ladies had a wonderful time of prayer, teaching, sharing and fellowship. We ended the afternoon with 6 special gift baskets to give away. 3 baskets were filled with items for ladies and the other 3 were made just for the 3 pregnant mom's in the group. The baskets were filled with lots of products a mom-to-be would need, like vitamins, ointment for sore nipples, some diapers and wipes, baby lotion. I wanted to make these ladies something extra special, so she whipped out my sewing machine and put together some adorable bibs with matching burp cloths for each Mom. They were so excited!!

Stay tuned for our next update as we will have another outreach at the end of November for the Mom's with new babies. We have 4 new Mom's so far that are coming and possibly more. We are preparing more gift baskets and I will be creating something very special for each mom.

Many Yucatecans who were born here just stay here. They basically never leave. One of the few exceptions to this would be some of the upper class Yucatecans heading to the United States or other countries for advanced levels of education. This minority of folks usually come back to utilize their education here to provide services here. Examples of this would be various fields of medicine, architectural practice or various types of law. There is also a small weathly class of people that gained generational wealth from Henekan production and also a growing middle class amoung the educated. However, that still leaves the majority of Yucatecans largely uneducated and often impoverished and they stay that way from generation to generation.

Some of the wealthy and middle class have learned through education how to take care of themselves before, during and after pregnancy, but the lower class here is not educated about the importance of diet and vitamins before, during and after pregnancy. For generations, they have learned that you just have a child, feed them and protect them, but they do not understand the importance of early childhood developement as no one has taught them. They are often too poor to buy these necessary items. They hold there babies almost all the time, crawling is not really encouraged and necessary stimulation does not happen. What you see in their children as they grow is a lethargy and a lack of necessary development

This lower class that we speak of is growing in receptivity however. Again, we have teamed up with Tammy Allred of Inglesia Baptista Church to provide early childhood development information and supplies like vitamins, books to read to their children, baby rattles, developmental toys. Llana, as previously mentioned, helps with her education in early childhood developement to help us teach these moms and moms-to-be about the importance of taking care of themselves and their new babies to bring them to full development potential.

This is were you can help. Mexico typically does not produce alot of these items we have been talking about, so they import them which really drives the price up, almost double in some cases in comparison to the States. We can purchase most of these items here at Wal-Mart as they are the least expensive even here. Please consider a donation for us to provide pre-natal vitamins, developmental toys and other necessary items. We cannot receive care packages as the mail system here can sometimes be unreliable. Many packages are stolen or looted before they arrive.

Please help us break the cycle here for these Mom's with education and supplies!!

SIMPLIFY TO RELIEVE STRESS

Simplicity. How can we make things simpler, more streamlined, or more efficient? Is this all just hype or is there actually something to this simplicity thing?

Reducing complexity in my life has reduced stress, increased free time, and top priorities are actually top priorities. When we simplify as much as we can we are better able to slow down and enjoy each moment as opposed to rushing through it. Here are a few ways you can simplify the various aspects of your life:

1. Turn off your cell phone.
2. Process email only twice a day.
3. Go to bed early.
4. Get rid of (or at least reduce) commitments that you do out of obligation.
5. Create a weekly meal plan.
6. Automate your finances.
7. Purge as much unneeded clutter as possible.
8. Keep your paper shredder on top of your recycling bin.
9. Add items you want to a wish list as you think of them.
10. Get a label maker or write labels out by hand.
11. Set your clothes out for the next day the night before.
12. Make your lunch for the next day the night before.
13. Make time to catch up with an old friend.
14. Just say no.
15. Ask for experiences not things for your birthday and Christmas this year.
16. Tell the truth.
17. Keep your list of addresses and phone numbers up to date.
18. Consolidate debt.
19. Create an organizing system that works for you.
20. Keep a bag for garbage in your car.
21. Cary a notebook and pen with you where ever you go.
22. Unsubscribe from emails, newsletters or RSS feeds that don’t provide value anymore.
23. Apologize immediately when you realize you’ve done wrong.
24. Enjoy the present moment as much as you can.
25. Take time to really see the little things in life.
26. Reduce the amount of TV you watch.
27. Get outside.
28. Create morning, daytime, and evening routines.
29. Ask for help.
30. Do things at home as much as possible (eat, date nights, entertain etc.).
31. Don’t get caught up in other people’s drama.
32. Let go of the self-imposed need to be perfect.
33. Focus on a simple, but healthy, eating plan.
34. Share responsibilities.
35. Reduce your wardrobe to a few versatile items.
36. Be positive.
37. Start a gratitude journal.
38. Finish old tasks before taking on new ones.
39. For every new item that enters your home set two free.
40. Want what you have not what you don’t.
41. Revisit what you carry with you in your purse or wallet.
42. Focus on one thing at a time.
43. Store new garbage bags at the bottom of your garbage can.

FRUGAL COMPUTER MAINTENANCE TIPS

Hi All,

You have all seen the ads! "is you computer running slow?, just download this program to speed it up" Buyer beware! Many of these programs are scams, and may even ruin your computer.

After many computer crashes followed by expensive repair bills, I have found what I believe is the best preventative solution to keeping your computer bug free, crash free & they are FREE!

Our boys love to play computer games from all those free game websites. Unfortunately, many of those sites will place bugs and spyware on your computer. Even those popular social networking sites like Facebook, will load up your harddrive with infections. so what to do.

~You need a good anti-virus program with firewall like, McAfee, etc., Many internet providers will give these downloads to you for free~
~You need to download the free version of Malwarebytes~
~You need to download the free version of Spybot~
~You need to download the free version of SuperAntiSpyware~

Everynight, you need to first click on the update downloads for each program, then run a quick scan. Once a week, run a full scan which is longer.

I know this sounds like alot, but it is well worth it for your frugal budget! and your computer will last alot longer.
