FOSTER PARENTS MONTH

I just found out yesterday that this is Foster Parents Month. Our Baptist Children's & Family caseworker brought us a present in celebration of the work we do.

We were so blessed to receive Camille when she was 7 months old. Camille had been taken from her father & mother at birth as the hospital found drugs in Camille's system. Camille was then place by CPS at a relatives home, which is usually what they do first. Soon CPS began to find out that mom & dad were visiting Camille at the relatives house & the relatives house was infested with cockroaches.

We had just been certified for fostering for two weeks when we got the emergency call to take her. CPS was to bring her to us around noon that day. We got Camille at midnight as her mother found out that CPS was going to take her away, so mom decided to kidnap her from the relatives home. After a court order and several searches, the police found her and she became part of our household.

Camille has been a joyful addition to our house. We have gotten to see all her milestones: crawling, walking, etc. Although Camille is 23 months and does not talk, we have had Easter Seals in our home for many months now doing speach therapy with her. Therapists think it might be from the trauma of her life that is holding her back from speaking. Camille also has severe food allergies. It all began after she was weened from her formula. She already had some eczema on her skin, but as I tried new foods, she began to break out in larger scale. She is allergic to corn, wheat, rice, milk, eggs, peanuts & a environmental allergy to cockroaches. It has been a challenge to find foods for her to eat, but we have a allergy specialist working with her.

As foster parents, you are trained to understand that reuniting the children with there parents is the number one priority. That sound very logical and it is until the emotions come into it. We all adore Camille and have become very attached to her.

Now it is time for Camille to go back to her Mom. Her father is in jail and he is no longer aloud to be in her life for certain reasons. Camille's mom is doing well and I have had the blessing and the curse to be able to spend time with her. What I mean by that is I have had the opportunity to encourage her mom to stay the course, don't give up & she has done well. She has found a full time job, going through drug treatment & found a new place to live. But it has also been hard being this close to her mom emotionally. I don't feel any judgment toward her, we all have our sins to bear.

With all that said, no regrets, we would not have changed a thing. At times I wished I was like most foster parents who work outside the home and never have contact with the biological parents. but I don't think that was God's plan on this one. We are sad to see her go, but happy to see her reunite with her mom & her 4 year old brother. If you know someone who Fosters, please wish them a happy foster parent month!! It can be a hard job, but like it is said, someone has to do it!!

Our family is now onto a new chapter & journey in our lives. I will be revealing more about our big new journey later this month!!

SUCESSFUL BLOGGING TIPS~FRUGAL MOMPRENEUR TIPS

I honestly think that anyone can get noticed and become successful in almost any niche. So, here are some helpful tips for sucessful blogging.

Rule #1: Stay the Course

Rule #1 is simple, but nothing works if you keep changing your mind.

Stop changing your mind. Stop doubting yourself and your decisions, pick something, believe in it, and go for it. This rule alone will get you where you need to go and stop you from falling short of success.

Remember this when it comes to rule #2.

Rule #2: Be Different

The point here is to stand out, and the best way to do that is to be different. That's why we can still find Waldo (with his candy-cane striped shirt and red cap) amongst a sea of people on a page. He's unique.

This is exactly how I've found success online. I saw what everyone else was doing, and did something different. What everyone else is doing is what consumers and readers all eventually get used to. Choose to go the same path, and you'll just blend in with the rest.

Here are some personal examples to prove it to you:

With the Small Sprouts Blog, I do even more to "be different". There are so many other "Boutique" blogs out there all doing the same thing, that it actually became very easy for me to stand out.

For one, I don't hide anything. I tell it all from my own experience, even the failures or that parts that I sucked at.

Thirdly, I made sure I had a totally customized blog theme.

Fourthly, I blog about my personal life. A lot of you probably know that I have a foster daughter and three boys of my own. Many of my blog posts relate to my real life.  I see so many other owners of blogs who don't even use their real name.

Lastly, and probably most importantly, I don't hard sell or promote anything. This has probably been the key to my success, but with so many people going online today to try and make a buck, everyone is getting tired of seeing ads and promotions. and why my blog is virtually ad free. Now that's totally being different, right?

So, how can you be different?

I'm sure there are a thousand ways, both small and extreme that you can do to be different. Check out what all of your competitors are doing, and don't do that. Find something common between the websites that are in your same niche, and do the opposite.

This is how Gary Vaynerchuk of Crush It! became a success too, by streaming live TV and talking wine to "regular" people.

What are you going to do differently?

GINGIVITIS & PERIODONTAL DISEASE~FRUGAL MOMPRENEUR TIP

By some estimations one in three people over the age of 30 has some form of periodontal disease, but are unaware of it because it is a problem that develops silently and painlessly. Periodontal disease occurs when bacteria in plaque infect the gums and bones that anchor the teeth. Periodontitis and dental decay are the primary causes of adult tooth loss. Bacterial toxins are then released into the bloodstream, beginning a cascade of health problems. We can't stress strongly enough the importance of addressing gingivitis if you have it, as recent research has revealed a relationship between periodontal infection and more serious health problems, such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, respiratory diseases, and pre-term low birth weight babies.

Several studies have shown that chronic dental infection is associated with a significant increase in the risk of stroke. Here's why: bacteria from dental plaque, including Streptococcus sanguis, can enter your bloodstream and cause blood platelets to clump together and clot abnormally. Normally the bacteria are cleared from your body by the immune system, but if your immune system is compromised, as is the case with any infection, the bacteria create a major risk factor. Gum infections elevate fibrinogen and the clotting factor, leading to chronic inflammation and the build-up of arterial plaque, which reduces circulation. The result is atherosclerosis, hardening and narrowing of the arteries, and this can lead to a heart attack or stroke.

As with any infection, we want to reiterate that your immune system is compromised, thereby allowing the infection to take hold and spread unchecked. As part of your Wellness Program, it will be very beneficial to strengthen your immune system.

Tips

Brush your teeth with a soft toothbrush after every meal. This will help remove the source of material that leads to plaque.

Floss at least once a day to remove any food particles or plaque buildup.

Massage your gums daily with a rubber-tipped gum stimulator. This will increase the flow of blood to the area and help promote healing.

Wellness Program

• Many people with periodontal disease have been found to be deficient in CoQ10. Supplementing with this nutrient should be beneficial in treating this disease.

• In addition, the infection mentioned above seems to affect those with folic acid deficiencies more so than those who aren't deficient. Because of this fact, gum disease may be an indicator of a folic acid deficiency. To help eliminate gum disease and its risk factor for stroke, take 800-5,000 mcg of folic acid daily.

• We suggest closely following a periodontal program recommended by your dentist. In addition, there are four things to add to your dentist's regimen:

Enamel Saver® toothpaste Enamel Saver® toothpaste has been shown to reduce periodontal disease, and is SLS-free.

Grapefruit seed extract (GSE) Grapefruit seed extract is nature's best antibiotic, and is very helpful in fighting oral bacteria. Add a drop of GSE to your toothpaste and brush at least two times a day.

Hydrogen peroxide Take two capfuls of 3% hydrogen peroxide and swish it around your mouth and spit out. Do this every evening for a week or until you notice improved gum health, then only once a week for maintenance. In addition, to help knock out the bacteria mentioned above that may be causing periodontal disease, put enough hydrogen peroxide to cover the bristles of your toothbrush in a glass and keep the brush in it. Change the peroxide weekly.

Vitamin C Take 1-3 grams of natural vitamin C daily to help build healthy tissue. Vitamin C is also a powerful antioxidant that helps fight infection.

Calcium A study showed that people getting less than 500 mg of calcium daily had a 54% greater chance of having gum disease than those getting 800 mg or more. So add a calcium supplement to your daily preventive regimen.

Folk Remedies

Cranberries There is a compound in cranberries that prevents microorganisms from adhering to cells in the urinary tract where they cause urinary tract infections (UTIs). These "anti-adhesion" properties that prevent bacteria from forming in the urinary tract also prevent bacteria from growing in the mouth where they form dental plaque, which is the leading cause of gum disease.

Lemon juice Add the juice of one freshly squeezed lemon to a glass of warm water. Use as a mouthwash for one minute. The lemon will kill the bacteria that cause the gingivitis, and the acid will dissolve the plaque and strengthen the gums. Two remedies in one! Do this after every brushing. The tooth enamel with receive a protective coating from the toothpaste, this protecting it from the acid of the lemon.

Neem oil Neem (Azadirachta indica) is valued in Ayurvedic medicine for its varied healing properties due to its anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, and anti-viral capabilities. A cousin of mahogany, neem is a tropical evergreen tree native to India and Myanmar. Over 60 medicinal uses have been documented for neem so far - such as acne, eczema, psoriasis, cold sores, dandruff, athlete's foot, ulcers, ringworm, and gingivitis, to name a few. For gingivitis, gargle with a solution of 12-20 drops of neem leaf extract in two ounces of water, or use neem toothpaste. Caution: Pregnant women or those trying to conceive, should not ingest any neem product.

Sage Make a strong tea of sage and add sea salt to make a mouthwash. Pour a cup of boiling water over one tablespoon of sage leaves; cover and steep for 15 minutes; strain; add two teaspoons of sea salt. Use twice daily after brushing your teeth. Refrigerate. Both sage and sea salt have antiseptic properties that reduce inflammation and promote healing. They are also astringent, which helps tighten the gums.

Tea tree oil Add a drop of tea tree oil to your toothbrush on top of your toothpaste; brush as usual. Tea tree oil, derived from the leaves of the native Australian Melaleuca alternifolia tree, contains antiseptic compounds which help prevent gum disease. Make sure the product label says it is 100% pure tea tree oil.

GENETICALLY MODIFIED FOODS~FRUGAL MOMPRENEUR TIP

I strongly believe that one of the most obvious clues about the danger of GMO foods are that just about EVERY species of animal that is offered a GMO food versus a non-GMO food will avoid the GMO one. Many times they will do this to the point of starvation, as they have an intuitive sense of the danger of this food.

If you have more time with them you can bring up the sterility argument that is expanded upon with these new research findings. You might have read this before that genetically modified foods may cause sterility in future generations but now the latest research from Russia provides shocking confirmation of this potential.

This study, which was conducted by the Russian equivalent of the US National Association for Gene Security, has not yet been published, but its findings were recently announced. It’s anticipated that the details will be published later this summer.

Russian Scientists Find Third Generation of Hamsters Sterilized by GM Soy

The release of this new information provides yet another health risk, and confirmation on earlier problems related to fertility, birth weight of offspring, and infant mortality.

In this feeding study they used hamsters, an animal which has not been previously featured in GM safety studies.

One group of hamsters was fed a normal diet without any soy whatsoever, a second group was fed non-GMO soy, a third ate GM soy, and a fourth group ate an even higher amount of GM soy than the third.

Using the same genetically modified (GM) soy that is produced on over 90 percent of the soy acreage in the US, the hamsters and their offspring were fed their respective diets over a period of two years, during which time the researchers evaluated three generations of hamsters.

First they took five pairs of hamsters from each group, each of which produced about seven to eight litters each, totaling about 140 animals.

At first all went well, but serious problems became apparent when they selected new pairs from the offspring.

The first problem was that this second generation had a slower growth rate and reached their sexual maturity later than normal.

However, this second generation eventually generated another 39 litters:

•The no-soy control group had 52 pups

•The non-GM soy had 78

•The GM soy had only 40, of which 25 percent died

So these second-generation GM soy-fed hamsters had a five-fold higher infant mortality rate, compared to the 5 percent normal death rate that was happening in the controls.

Nearly All of the Third-Generation GMO Babies Were Sterile!
But then an even bigger problem became apparent, because nearly all of the third generation hamsters lost the ability to have babies altogether.

Only a single third-generation female hamster gave birth to 16 pups, and of those, one fifth died.

In short, nearly the entire third generation of GM soy eaters were sterile!

But it doesn’t end there.

In the GM soy-fed groups they also found an unusually high prevalence of an otherwise extremely rare phenomenon – hair growing inside the animals’ mouths. (You can see the images here.)

You CAN avoid GMOs, if you know what to look for.

First of all, remember there are eight genetically modified food crops:

1.Soy

2.Corn

3.Cottonseed (used in vegetable cooking oils)

4.Canola (canola oil)

5.Sugar from sugar beets

6.Hawaiian papaya

7.Some varieties of zucchini

8.Crookneck squash

Based on this list, anything containing soy or soy derivatives should be avoided, as well as anything containing corn, the most obvious ingredient being high fructose corn syrup.

The easiest way to avoid ending up with GM foods in your shopping cart is to do some pre-planning using the free non-GMO shopping guide, available at www.NonGMOshoppingGuide.com.

TheInstitute for Responsible Technology has also created a free iPhone application that is available in the iTunes store. You can find it by searching for ShopNoGMO in the applications.

The shopping guide lists the various derivatives of each crop to be avoided, and even better, it lists hundreds of brand products in 22 food categories that are non-GMO, so if you’re still buying processed foods, at least you can easily select a brand that does not use genetically modified ingredients.

10 BEST BEAUTY TIMESAVERS~FRUGAL MOMPRENEUR TIP

We'll make this quick: you're time starved, and you're looking for ways to get out the door looking pretty and polished that take a hot minute. Or you're just really, really lazy. Either way, we feel you. Here are 10 timesavers to get you gorgeous so you can save more minutes for living a beautiful life.

Tinted Moisturizer with SPF. With one swipe, you get hydrated skin, a sheer wash of color, and protection from the ultimate ager, the sun.

Convertible color. Instead of juggling separate lipsticks, blush, and eye shadow, choose a single chubby stick or pot of color that prettifies all over.
Brighten eyes. Use a bit of highlighter on the inner corners of your eyes and coat lashes with a glossy, lengthening mascara for a bright-eyed look. Also try using a white eye pencil on the inner rims of eyes.

Conditioner as shaving cream. Coat the bottom half of your strands with conditioner, and while it's doing the work of penetrating your dry strands with moisture, use another squirt to shave your legs.

Fix a self-tanner gaffe. Dip a cotton ball in lemon juice and run over streaky areas -- lemon juice is a natural exfoliator and skin lightener.

Super fast dry hair. Blow dry your hair from underneath, rather than aiming the nozzle at the top strands first. Flip your head over or clip top layers up.

2-in-1. Use a combo cleanser and toner on your face, hydrating body washes in the shower (so you can skip lotion), exfoliating body washes, and a shampoo-conditioner combo.

Basic hair with a boost. You only have time for a ponytail or bun. Dress it up with a headband, tease a little volume at the crown, add a blingy barrette, or wrap a piece of your own hair around the ponytail holder for some polish points.

Make a blow-out last. Sleep with it in a high, loose ponytail and dust with dry shampoo when it starts to look a little greasy.

Nice nails. When you step out of the shower, rub a bit of olive oil into the nail bed and cuticles to heal delicate, raggedy skin.

10 REASONS TO BE OPTIMISTIC RIGHT NOW~FRUGAL MOMPRENEUR TIP

Let’s face it—the world is not a perfect place. The economy is still in intensive care, crime rates are high, the health care reform bill is worrying millions, and we live on a planet that is heating up. But hang on a minute, the world has always been plagued by worries, woes, and doom and gloom merchants. Is it really all that bad now?

Granted it may sometimes be difficult to look on the bright side of life, but the picture is nowhere as grim as some people are painting it. This really is a wonderful time to be alive and there is so much for women to be positive about. And I’m not talking about putting on a brave face or making the best of a tough situation.

The road to happiness may have a few potholes, but it is still there and we can make the journey untroubled if we keep reminding ourselves of the things to feel great about. So here are my top ten reasons to be optimistic right now.

1. More women are making more money than ever before
From the kitchen table startups to multimillionaire mompreneurs, more women are taking control of their lives and shaping their own destinies. We are taking advantage of the abundance of financial opportunities that are out there, seizing the moment to create the wealth that we could only once dream of. A 2009 study by the Women’s Business Research Center highlighted the fact that women-owned businesses are growing at twice the rate of all businesses. We have taken note of the recession, but have not been swamped by it. It’s been a time when women have shown their true entrepreneurial spirit by starting new businesses or revamping their existing ones.

2. We are living longer
Life expectancy is at an all-time high. The rate and pace of scientific advances and improved diet and lifestyles means that Americans are living much longer. Chronic conditions such as heart disease are in decline because of better diagnosis, prevention, and treatment, and our chances of beating breast cancer are better than at any other time in history. Not only are we living longer but we are staying healthier, too, as we have learned to take much better care of ourselves. The health messages are getting through as cigarettes are being stubbed out in record numbers. We are drinking in moderation and reaping the benefits of keeping our bodies in tip-top shape.

3. The world is a safer place
Although it may seem like a falsity, we are actually living through one of the most peaceful times in recent history. In The Post- American World, Fareed Zakaria, editor of Newsweek International, cites research studies that show wars of all kinds have been declining since the mid-1980s. He contends that we are at the lowest levels of global violence since the 1950s. And Harvard psychologist Steven Pinker believes we are probably enjoying “the most peaceful time in our species’ existence.” The only reason it doesn’t feel that way is because of the growth of the information age and the intensity and immediacy of the images from the world’s troubled hotspots that are beamed to our television sets every day.

4. Age is no longer a barrier
We can achieve whatever we want at any stage of our life. Women are looking great and accomplishing more in their fifties, sixties, and beyond. The baby boomer generation is redefining what it is to be “old” and pushing that label to a much later age. Instead of retirement, it’s reinvention, as women are realizing they have so much time to do something with the rest of their lives. Whether embarking on a round-the-world adventure, planning a daredevil parachute jump, or starting a whole new career, age puts no limits on what we can do.

5. We can have work/ life balance
Women can and do have it all. We are strong, determined, and driven, and despite the struggles faced by previous generations we are able to balance rewarding careers with fulfilling personal lives. Keeping a house and career on track is not a cinch, but a recent survey by the global consulting management firm Accenture revealed that the majority of young professional women believe they can combine a satisfying and successful career with a full, active, and vibrant personal life.

6. We are leading more spiritual lives
A renewed interest in spirituality is giving more meaning to our lives. No longer are we neglecting and starving our souls. The soul is the source of our inspiration, hope, and joy. And we are meditating, practicing yoga, and learning to take better care of our spiritual and emotional needs. Self-care is no longer a luxury, but a vital life-enhancing practice that we are making time for.

7. We are the teachers
Women are not only able to nurture, shape, and influence their own children, but the rest of the nation’s youth are also benefiting from our wisdom, as 90% of elementary school teachers are women. “Knowledge is love and life and vision,” said Helen Keller, and our greater capacity for compassion, unconditional love, and foresight guides and enriches the minds of the next generation. It is a powerful and privileged position to be in.

8. Women are wealth creators
Today, women entrepreneurs are making an enormous impact on the economy, contributing almost $3 trillion to the nation’s coffers every year and creating or maintaining 23 million jobs (16% of all U.S. jobs). That’s according to a study carried out by the Center for Women’s Business Research. The report also stated that if U.S.-based women-owned businesses were their own country, they would have the fifth largest GDP in the world, putting them ahead of countries that include France, the United Kingdom, and Italy. We are a boom industry, and what’s even better news is that we’re only just getting started!

9. The Internet makes shopping a snap
Never before has it been so easy to indulge in a spot of retail therapy—and for the best price—as the world’s biggest shopping mall is right at our fingertips. We can browse through the latest collections in the hippest boutiques, have a virtual fitting of a gorgeous new outfit, and order just about anything we desire from the comfort of our laptop or PC. No more lines, ill-tempered shop assistants, or traffic jams as the Internet brings us the unbridled joy of worldwide window-shopping. The surge of pleasure that comes with a fabulous new purchase is just one simple mouse click away.

10. Candlelit bubble baths
Turn the lights down low, put on some soothing sounds, light a few scented candles, and sink into the tub for a long luxurious soak. Candlelit bubble baths are still one of the best ways for any woman to unwind, and they’re tax free! They never fail to relax me when I’m tense or rejuvenate me when I’m beat. Treasure these moments of pure bliss that leave you feeling like a goddess.

Focus on what feels great
No matter how dark the days may look we can turn things around by focusing on the things that make us feel optimistic. Draw up your own top ten list, keep it within eyesight, and keep your eyes and mind fixed on what is good about the world. Storm clouds may gather, but concentrating on all the things that inspire us will make it easier to achieve our goals.

ARE YOU EATING TOO MUCH SALT!~FRUGAL MOMPRENEUR TIP

WASHINGTON - The Food and Drug Administration says it will consider a new call Tuesday to force food makers to gradually cut the salt hidden inside their products — but don't expect less salty soups, pizzas or pastas any time soon.

Americans eat about 1½ teaspoons of salt daily, more than double what they need for good health and high enough to increase risk of high blood pressure, strokes and other problems. Most of that sodium doesn't come from the table salt-shaker — it's hidden inside common processed foods and restaurant meals.

Major foods makers have started reducing sodium in recent years, but have argued that they don't have tasty ways to replace sodium for deep cuts — and they fear consumer backlash as the taste changes.

On Tuesday, the prestigious Institute of Medicine said the food industry hasn't done enough to voluntarily cut back. Echoing earlier calls from the American Medical Association and other health groups, the IOM urged the government to set maximum sodium levels for different foods in a stepped rollback — so that eventually, the average consumption would drop by about half a teaspoon.

A gradual reduction would let people adjust to the change in flavor.

"We don't believe this is a fast project by any means," said Dr. Jane E. Henney of the University of Cincinnati, a former FDA commissioner who headed the IOM's study. "We think it's important and imperative to get started, but we think this will probably take years to accomplish."

The FDA hasn't decided whether to regulate sodium levels, but "no options are off the table," said spokeswoman Meghan Scott.

"A lot would have to be done before any decision is made to regulate sodium levels," Scott said. But, "there is very little debate any longer over the impact sodium has."

The IOM is an independent agency chartered by Congress to advise the federal government, and is just the latest in a string of health groups to pressure the FDA in recent years to cut the salt.

The American Medical Association has said that if the salt in processed and restaurant food were cut in half over 10 years, that ultimately 150,000 lives a year could be saved.

One in three U.S. adults has high blood pressure, in turn a leading cause of heart attacks, strokes and kidney failure. And while being overweight and inactive raises blood pressure, too much salt is a big culprit as well.

Government guidelines set 2,300 milligrams of sodium as the maximum daily intake — the amount above which health problems can appear. But the IOM says people need just 1,500 mg a day, even less if they're over 50. Yet average consumption is more than 3,400 mg.

HOW TO RELIST AN ITEM ON CRAIGSLIST FOR FREE INTERNET ADVERTISING~FRUGAL MOMPRENEUR TIP

Our family is in the process of Spring cleaning & getting rid of stuff we don't need. I alway go to Craigslist first, maybe some EBay, garage sale & finally Goodwill or Freecycle.org. Here are some tips to sell on Craigslist.

So you've posted your item on Craigslist and didn't end up getting the type of response you had hoped for. The great thing about the majority of Craigslist posts is that they are free internet advertising. This means that if you don't get the type of response you would like, you can post your item again using their free online advertising.

Free advertising makes Craigslist a wonderful marketplace for buyers or sellers to buy and sell. Relisting your item with some basic changes will make a world of difference and advertise your item in a completely different light.

Instructions
Step 1:Delete your old free online advertising post.
Once you've logged in to your account you can view your past online posts and choose to delete them. If you can't remember what you listed in your post, read through it before you delete the post. This will refresh your memory on what you wrote so you can change your listing when you relist your post.

Step 2:Click the "Post to Classifieds" option.
This link will enable you to start building your new free advertising listing. Make sure you change the description or information about your post. If you are selling something, consider including pictures or more detailed descriptions. If your post is a personal or community activity, try to inform the readers of reasons why they should be interested in you, or your activity.

Step 3:Lower your price.
If you are selling an item, you may want to consider lowering your price. The price doesn't have to be dramatically dropped, but enough to start getting a few people to respond.

Step 4:Include pictures.
Seeing pictures of your item, or even yourself is a great way to let people know you are serious about your item. Include tasteful pictures that give the reader a good idea about the item.

Step 5: If you don't succeed, try again.  It's free!

Craigslist is a free internet advertising website. If you don't succeed in selling or buying a specific item, keep checking with the website until you are successful.

NATURAL SPELLER VERSUS HAS-TO-BE-TAUGHT~FRUGAL MOMPRENEUR TIP

**This article is re-printed from one of my favorite Homeschooling blogs.

Having homeschooled 7 children, I eventually figured out that either kids come as “natural spellers” or they don’t. And if they don’t, you have to teach them to spell.

The natural speller can see the word in their head. You might see them writing it with their finger in the air when they are figuring out the spelling of a word. Spelling comes pretty easily to this child.

The “has-to-be-taught” speller is just as intelligent. In fact, spelling doesn’t have much to do with intelligence. As soon as the “has-to-be-taught” speller gets some memory clues or rules to go by, they can spell just as well as anyone. Of my 7 children, a few of them are natural spellers.

For the natural spellers, it is pretty much a waste of time to give them spelling lists, spelling tests, workbooks, or spelling activities. They will get it eventually, no matter what you inflict upon them. They can see the word in their mind’s eye and the more times they see it, read it or write it, the easier it gets. For a natural speller, I have found the best exercise is to correct their daily journal writing, and help them analyze a misspelled word. Once it is pointed out, they can practice that word—write it a few times each day perhaps. A memory clue is big help, such as pointing out the word end in the word friend (a friend is a friend to the end). Once they can see the right spelling, they generally do great at self-correction in the future.

Here are a few spelling clues to get you thinking:

here, hear
hear–you hear with your ear. See the word ear in hear.
here and there are places. You can see here in there.

together
Separate the word into syllables: to-get-her
If you are going somewhere together, you have “to get her” first.

The main thing is to talk through the misspelled word with your child the first time you spot it. Just dissecting it is often enough to help a natural speller see and correct his mistake. When my son spelled rock as roc, I asked him to spell sock, clock, block, lock, etc. As he put the ck on the end of each word, he quickly recognized the pattern and fixed rock without another word from me.

For my “have-to-be-taught” kids, my favorite resource is Better spelling in 5 minutes a day. This was a wonderful discovery in my homeschool, because my kids love to do it. It isn’t the usual dry-bones spelling rules with drill, drill, drill. Each section of this non-tortuous book briefly teaches you (the mom/teacher) how to present the spelling rule to your child, often with a little rhyming ditty, and then the rest of the section has games to practice with: mazes, word games and puzzles that reinforce the spelling rule. There is not even a spelling list! Or a test. Each lesson is a process of discovery in finding out which words follow the rule. It’s empowering! This book can be used from about age 9 and up, but even a teen will benefit and learn to spell better.

Good spelling is just about as important as brushed hair or a washed face. It is often the first impression we will make. In a day when email or texting is a common form of communication, spelling matters. Believe me, I have seen my share of misspelled job applications—and they are not very impressive. It’s worth it to teach our kids to spell!

NEW STUDY SUGGESTS ASTHMA COULD HAVE A NATURAL FIX~FRUGAL MOMPRENEUR TIP

Researchers have discovered that African American children with asthma in metropolitan Washington, DC, are significantly more likely to have low levels of vitamin D than healthy children.

This study supports recent research that suggests vitamin D plays a greater role in the body than just keeping bones healthy. Vitamin D deficiency has been recently linked to a variety of non-bone related diseases including depression, autoimmune disorders, and now asthma.

The research team found that 86 percent of the children in the study with asthma had insufficient levels of vitamin D, while only 19 percent of non-asthmatics had these low levels.

Only 5 to 37 percent of American infants meet the standard for vitamin D set by the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Although breast milk is the perfect food in every other way, it's often low in vitamin D. Since humans originated in equatorial areas with year-round sunshine, babies in the distant past wouldn't have needed to get vitamin D from breast milk. Many mothers also are vitamin D-deficient. Based on these facts, researchers now recommend that most babies should take a daily vitamin D supplement, reports USA Today.

In addition, Mothering Magazine offers several tips on how natural medicine can strengthen immune function to prevent asthma attacks.

Oriental medicine and Chinese herbs have the ability to directly strengthen immune function. The disadvantage of herbs is their bad taste, and the most effective strategy for children is to mix liquid extracts of herbs with juice to improve their taste.

A licensed acupuncturist experienced in the treatment of children can assess an individual child's needs and prescribe an herbal formula to relieve congestion and build immune function.

Massaging specific points on your child's body during asthmatic episodes helps to relieve cough, induce relaxation, and decrease wheezing. The techniques fall into two categories: pressing on acupuncture points and massage of acupuncture channels. Both are simple, straightforward, and require no training.

For more details, please see the full article in Mothering Magazine.

SAFE MOSQUITO REPELLANT~FRUGAL MOMPRENEUR TIP

The rainy season is coming to alot of areas & that always means mosquitos. My friend Linda highly recommends Nature's Defender Cedar Oil Products. "Just to give you an idea of what the mosquito population is like here in Florida...most everyone who has a pool also has in enclosed in a screened room to keep out the bugs. We don't have any screen, and every time I go in the pool, I also have to battle the mosquitoes. We have several ways of dealing with them, such as citronella candles, but ours are all burned down at the moment".

So I sprayed the cedar oil on my hair (it's a very fine, non-greasy mist) and I watched the mosquitoes fly right up to my body and stop without landing and biting. I sprayed my husband's hair too, and he had no bites. I also had no bites from walking through the garden, which usually results in at least half a dozen bites. This stuff really works. (I should add that we walk in the pool, we don't swim, so our heads and shoulders are above water at all times.)

I have to tell you that it does smell like cedar wood. But it's not even as strong as most herbal repellents I've tried.

This company makes a whole variety of cedar repellants, for personal protection, pets, and farm animals. They have cedar oil sprays in various concentration for different uses, and red cedar granules that can be used indoors or out to repel repel fleas, mosquitos, roaches, scorpions, flies, no-see-ums--even venomous snakes--with no effect on beneficial insects such as butterflies and pollinating bees. Kills bedbugs, eliminates fire ant mounds, handles head lice...it's pretty amazing stuff.

9 INGREDIENTS TO AVOID IN PROCESSED FOODS~FRUGAL MOMPRENEUR TIP

If you know me at all, you know that I’m an advocate for whole, unprocessed foods. However, many of us inevitably turn to packaged or processed foods when we are short on time. Maybe we grab a frozen dinner or pizza for a quick dinner for our family. Maybe we grab a quick nutrition bar to satiate our hunger until we can sit down for a real meal. Or maybe, we just don’t like to cook. Whether we like it or not, packaged and processed food has become a huge part of our food industry and, as a result, a part of many of our diets.

Although there are some brands that I hugely advocate for, there are many more that border on outright unhealthy and “scary.” Many packaged foods that seem healthy often contain fillers, preservatives and other ingredients you don’t want in your diet. It is always preferable to choose products that have only a handful of ingredients, all of which should be recognizable. One test to know whether an ingredient is healthy is to ask yourself whether your grandmother would recognize it. If not, there is a good chance the ingredient is less natural food and more man-made chemical. Another good test is whether or not you can easily pronounce the ingredient. If you feel like you need a science degree to pronounce it properly, chances are the ingredient is worth avoiding.

If you do have to resort to a processed food for a snack or dinner (anything canned, packaged, etc.), try to avoid those that contain the ingredients listed in the following chart. Although this isn’t an exhaustive list, these ingredients are some of the most highly processed and least healthy of all:

Ingredient Why it is Used Why it is Bad

Artificial Colors:
*Chemical compounds made from coal-tar derivatives to enhance color.
*Linked to allergic reactions, fatigue, asthma, skin rashes, hyperactivity and headaches.

Artificial Flavorings
*Cheap chemical mixtures that mimic natural flavors.
*Linked to allergic reactions, dermatitis, eczema, hyperactivity and asthma
*Can affect enzymes, RNA and thyroid.

Artificial Sweeteners
*(Acesulfame-K, Aspartame, Equal®, NutraSweet®, Saccharin, Sweet’n Low®, Sucralose, Splenda® & Sorbitol) Highly-processed, chemically-derived, zero-calorie sweeteners found in diet foods and diet products to reduce calories per serving.
*Can negatively impact metabolism.
*Some have been linked to cancer, dizziness hallucinations and headaches.

Benzoate Preservatives
*(BHT, BHA, TBHQ)
*Compounds that preserve fats and prevent them from becoming rancid.
*May result in hyperactivity, angiodema, asthma, rhinitis, dermatitis, tumors and urticaria
*Can affect estrogen balance and levels.

Brominated Vegetable Oil
*(BVO)
*Chemical that boosts flavor in many citric-based fruit and soft drinks.
*Increases triglycerides and cholesterol
*Can damage liver, testicles, thyroid, heart and kidneys.

High Fructose Corn Syrup
*(HFCS) Cheap alternative to cane and beet sugar
*Sustains freshness in baked goods
*Blends easily in beverages to maintain sweetness.
*May predispose the body to turn fructose into fat
*Increases risk for Type-2 diabetes, coronary heart disease, stroke and cancer
*Isn’t easily metabolized by the liver.

MSG
(Monosodium Glutamate)
*Flavor enhancer in restaurant food, salad dressing, chips, frozen entrees, soups and other foods.
*May stimulate appetite and cause headaches, nausea, weakness, wheezing, edema, change in heart rate, burning sensations and difficulty in breathing.

Olestra
*An indigestible fat substitute used primarily in foods that are fried and baked.
*Inhibits absorption of some nutrients
*Linked to gastrointestinal disease, diarrhea, gas, cramps, bleeding and incontinence.

Shortening, Hydrogenated and Partially Hydrogenated Oils
*(Palm, Soybean and others) Industrially created fats used in more than 40,000 food products in the U.S.
*Cheaper than most other oils.
*Contain high levels of trans fats, which raise bad cholesterol and lower good cholesterol, contributing to risk of heart disease.

Have you checked your ingredient lists recently? Do they contain any of the above? Have you tried cutting some of these ingredients out?
