EXTEND THE LIFE OF YOUR RAZOR~FRUGAL MOMPRENEUR TIP

~SPRING IS HERE & SUMMER IS RIGHT AROUND THE CORNER~

Shaving first became popular during World War II when nylon stockings were in short supply and bare legs became a trend that has yet to cease.

With premium razor cartridges costing as much as a gallon of gas, it pays to squeeze extra use out of every one of them. A bit of mineral oil can greatly extend the life of your razor.

Although nothing can indefinitely extend the life of a disposable razor, you can do your best to keep some of the more damaging elements at bay.

By drying your razor and placing it in some liquid that repels water—in this case mineral oil—you can prevent minerals from your tap water from depositing themselves on the blade and keep water itself away from the blade to decrease oxidation on the surface. Eventually the blade will need to be swapped out, but many people who rinse and submerge the blade in a cup of mineral oil report greatly extending the life of the blade.

If you don't want to give up on shaving with a brand new and factory-fresh blade you can always switch to using a safety razor. The shave is better than the old cartridges and replacements are a mere 8 cents a piece. For more ways to squeeze life out of your razor, check out the full article at Wisebread.

FIX IT YOUR SELF~FRUGAL MOMPRENEUR TIP

~If you have a children, you probably have one of these Nintendo's around your house. They are pretty expensive, about $129.00 new, an yet they are also some what fragile. If you bought one new, for the first year, you will receive a warranty, but if you are Frugal Mom like me, you bought your used~

~Our 10 year old & 5 year old share ours. It has been dropped, thrown & just recently pulled apart at the hinge on one side after one of the hinges cracked (which is a common problem aparently in the older models)~

~You can send it to Nintendo to repair for a hefty sum, or do it yourself!! Google is the best resource for this. I decided to fix the hinge myself, so I just started Googling~

~You will first need to purchase on of these, called a Tri Wing Screwdriver~
~You cannot buy them locally. (I looked everywhere) EBay has them for about $5.00~

~Then you need to find this guy on Youtube.com, he calls himself Supermodchips~

~I love his accent, plus he has tons of these videos on how to repair just about any Nintendo problem~

~So, I followed his instructions & I did it!! But then, when I turned on a DS, the screen was all fuzzy. So I went back to Mr. Supermodchips and found the repair for that one too!

~Now my Boys think I am super mom once again~

~EAT ALMONDS & LOSE WEIGHT~FRUGAL TIP~

~I love food & I love to eat what I want, but I also have to exercise to keep my weight balanced~
~So, I try to get out and walk every day for 30 minutes~
~But when it is cold, my little Camille does not enjoy going out for walks, so I eat Almonds~
~ In know that sounds funny, but is has worked for me and there are reasons behind it, so I did some research to share with all of you~

Almonds have greater levels of satiety, that is, satisfaction or fullness from food. This may be due to the high fiber content of the almonds, and this greater satiety leads to an overall satisfaction of hunger that can help people to maintain a healthy weight. The studies done at Purdue University showed that adding nearly two servings of almonds to a person’s diet did not cause them to gain weight or body fat at all, but rather led them to decrease their intake of calories from other sources of food. Therefore they did not consume more calories overall but kept the same levels of consumption despite adding almonds to their diet.

Other Benefits are:

Eating almonds has the same effect as the cholesterol-lowering drugs called statins. A one and a half ounce handful of almonds is a leading source of vitamin E and magnesium and offers protein, fiber, potassium, calcium, phosphorus and iron in 246 calories. Also, almonds (and other nuts) contain phytochemicals, which are plant chemicals that may provide powerful protection against heart disease, stroke, and other chronic diseases.

One of my blog followers, Shelby, made this comment below:
Almonds also help to keep hormones in balance better than most other nuts like peanuts or cashews :)

Thanks Shelby! I love when information gets added into comments as we all have lots to share.

WHOLESALE/RETAIL ETIQUETTE

~This post is for those of you that retail or wholesale products (or plan to), either by website, blog site, Etsy, EBay, Craigslist, etc.,~

~ I laugh when I think about some of the experiences I have had with my retail website over the last 6 years, along with 1 year of wholesaling my products (which I no longer do)~

~My website has become sooooooooo busy and I am always looking for seasoned seamstresses to make our products. Recently, I started looking again for someone to help me custom make a very popular product of ours. My search always begins on EBay & Etsy~

~I contacted a talented seamstress on EBay who was selling a similar product for $29.00, as I was willing to pay her $50.00 to make them for me~I thought she would have jumped in excitement at the offer of some regular steady work for almost double what she was getting, especially if you add in the EBay fees she loses each sale~

~Her reply stunned me "No thank you" she said "I have plenty of work from my EBay store" Translation: She did not want to give up her $29.00 per hour job to take the same job for $50.00 per hour~That is just bad business, maybe even a little bad etiquette~

~Several times I have made a wholesale to retail agreement with ladies I have found on EBay or Etsy, & then they want to up their price and put me on a longer waiting list. What that means is they see me selling there products at a higher price from my website & now they want more money & they want to put my customers on the back burner, while they take in more customers of there own. This is bad business & bad etiquette!!~

~Here are some tips: If you are looking for someone to make your products or wanting to retail someone elses products, always ask for a sample to be mailed to you first, so you can inspect their work. If they are not willing to do that, move on~
Don't be greedy! Offer them a decent wage to sew or make your item for you. In the long run you will get a loyal worker if you treat them with respect.
You will have to dig through some granite before you find the diamonds in the ruff! Good workers take time to find!! I have several ladies that sew for me that are professional, timely and loyal & I treat them well as they should be.

~On the other side, there are some retailers that show bad etiquette also & if you want to wholesale to a retail source, GET IT IN WRITING!! be specific about what they expect from you in product, price and timing~

~ I have written more extensively on the subject of wholesale & retail in my EBook "Start & Run your own online business on a frugal budget" Go to the "EBook" tab at the top of this page to purchase a copy~

~THE HEALING POWER OF MUSIC~FREE THERAPY

Music has touched the human soul across all boundaries of time, space, and genre. Indeed, the healing power of music has been documented for millennia. An account involving two of the legendary kings of Israel is thought to have been written during the reign of Solomon. "And whenever the evil spirit from God was upon Saul, David took the lyre and played it with his hand; so Saul was refreshed, and was well, and the evil spirit departed from him." Saul's experience is echoed in our daily lives, leading William Congreve to observe, "Music has charms to soothe a savage breast," and Yo-Yo Ma to comment, "Healing? I think that is what music is all about. Don't you?"

The sound of piano music coming from the operating theatre was the first clue that something unusual was afoot. As the theatre doors swung open and the trolley was wheeled in, the patient was greeted by a smiling surgeon sitting at a piano playing "The More I See You".

As the surgeon played on, with random extracts from other piano works, the patient was sedated and prepared for surgery. With the patient and theatre team ready, the music finally stopped, and the surgeon stood up and began his day job.

The experiment in Hawaii, a world first, was testing whether music has an effect on health, pain and vital signs, such as blood pressure and heart and breathing rates, as well as levels of hormones and antibodies.

Meanwhile, a second team of researchers has found that music has a powerful effect on the immune system, boosting compounds that defend the body against infections.

Evidence is growing that music can have a beneficial effect for patients. Researchers have been looking for effects in conditions as varied as stroke, autism, heart problems, mental health, depression, pain, fractured limbs, Alzheimer's and lung disease. Piped music has been used to ease anxiety before operations, and harp music to reduce pain after surgery, with some research suggesting it can be as effective as the sedative Valium.

Listening to music has been found to aid recovery after a stroke and heart attack. A study of 60 men and women at Helsinki University found that patients who listened to music soon after having a stroke recovered better. Three months after the stroke, memory had improved by 60 per cent in those provided with music, compared to 29 per cent in a control group. Concentration, mood and attention to detail also improved in the music group by 17 per cent, compared to no change in the other.

Music has been found to ease chronic and acute pain, too. Research at Dongsan University in Korea on 40 patients with fractured legs showed that 30 to 60 minutes of music a day lowered levels of pain and of blood pressure, and also improved respiration rates.

Immunity, too, can benefit. South African researchers have successfully used Bach's Magnificat to benefit mood, boost the immune system and lower stress hormones in people undergoing physiotherapy for infectious lung disease.

Regularly listening can also lower high blood pressure. Patients who listened to 25 minute of music a day for four weeks lowered their blood pressure, while a control group who were played no music saw no change in their condition. After four weeks, the average drop for the music group in systolic blood pressure was 11.8 mmHg and for diastolic, 4.7 mmHg. There were no significant changes in the control group. "Music therapy may be an alternative for hypertension treatment," say the researchers from the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

Some research suggests that not all music is effective. Tune and tempo have been found to be more important than melody, rhythm, harmony or timbre. Quick, pulsating rhythms and vigorous music have been shown to have a counter effect, triggering negative emotions.

So how exactly does the body derive health benefits from music? At one level, it may work simply as a distraction, taking the mind off the pain. When healthy people are exposed to experimental pain, as they were in research at Glasgow Caledonian University, they had greater tolerance to it when they were listening to their favourite music.

But distraction is not the only way in which symptoms are eased. One Finnish stroke-recovery study found that music is processed and handled in different parts of the brain, and one suggestion is that by holding the patient's attention, it stimulates nerve cells which go on to bypass the region damaged by the stroke.

One theory is that it works through the emotion circuitry of the brain, which has an effect on the production of key hormones, which in turn impact on body functions, from the repair of nerves to pain relief.

The latest research, by the Max Planck Institute for Human Cognitive and Brain Sciences in Leipzig and the University of Sussex, had provided new evidence about how music boosts the immune system.

The researchers carried out two studies looking at the effects of music on stress hormones. After exposing around 300 people to happy dance music, the researchers measured levels of immunoglobulin A or IgA and hormones including cortisol and adrenocorticotropic hormone.

Results show that cortisol levels dropped significantly, while IgA levels went up considerably in those exposed to music for around 50 minutes. Effects on compounds involved in inflammation and behaviour were also seen, and mood improved noticeably in those exposed to music.

These findings provide clues to the understanding the role of music in health. Cortisol is a hormone produced in response to stress and it increases blood pressure and blood sugar levels, and weakens the immune system. The drop in levels of the hormone in response to music may explain the reduction in blood pressure and risk of infections found by other researchers.

The rise in IgA is also an important finding because it is an antibody that plays an essential role in protecting the body against infections and allergens.

In some cases, music has been effective as drug therapy. At the Hospital Mutua de Terrassa, in Barcelona, doctors compared the effectiveness of music to that of diazepam or Valium in reducing anxiety before surgery in 207 patients. One group had the drug, while the other listened to music on the day and eve of surgery. Just before the operation, heart rate and blood pressure were tested, and there was no difference between the two groups.

Back at the University of Hawaii, patients undergoing ophthalmic surgery were brought in prior to being sedated, and the surgeon, a classically trained pianist, reeled off a medley of tunes, each played in a slow to medium tempo. Blood pressure, heart rate and respiratory rate were all much better in the music group patients compared to a control group.

"This is the first study on the effect of live classical piano music on the vital signs of patients," say the University of Hawaii doctors – who point out that the unusual presence of a piano in the operating theatre led to no side effects for the patients.

FREE EBAY PICTURE TEMPLATES~FRUGAL TIP

~I do have an EBay site to sell some of my Ebay niche products, but I prefer to sell my products on my website and Etsy, as it is less expensive. However, when it comes to selling off items from our household like: kids & adult clothing or toys, EBay is the venue I use.

~When you are listing clothes, you need alot of picture windows in your listing and EBay charges for additional pictures. So I started googling "free picture templates", only to find that they are not free & being the frugal Mom that I am, I did not want to pay for this.

~I recently stumbled on this great free idea that works. My blog is on Blogger, were you can have as many blogs as you want. So in addition to this blog, I opened a private blog (only I can see it unless I invite others to see it) I use my private blog to write my EBooks & then copy and paste the info to my PDF reader when I am ready to publish.

~So I started thinking this might work for my EBay listings and it does!! Just open a private blog. Start a post and set up the post just like you would want it to look on EBay with all your info and pictures. Now on your blog post, click over to the edit HTML tab and copy all the code. Take the code over to you EBay seller listing and click on the HTML tab on your EBay listing. Paste your info copied from your blog post in to the EBay listing and there it is! As much info and pictures as you like for Free!!

~My auction templates are pretty basic, but if you have Picasa or Photoshop you can really be creative. With Picasa, just go to the create collage button and make a really neat template of pictures. Photoshop is a little more complicated, but worth it if you have the time~

Here is an example of an EBay listing I am running right now, using my free template:

~You will find more great tips like this is my EBooks, "Start & Run your own online business on a frugal budget" & "Driving traffic to your Website, blog site, Etsy & Ebay Store". Just click on the "EBook" tab at the top of this blog!!

~Happy selling~

SIMPLIFY TO RELIEVE STRESS

Simplicity. How can we make things simpler, more streamlined, or more efficient? Is this all just hype or is there actually something to this simplicity thing?

Reducing complexity in my life has reduced stress, increased free time, and top priorities are actually top priorities. When we simplify as much as we can we are better able to slow down and enjoy each moment as opposed to rushing through it. Here are a few ways you can simplify the various aspects of your life:

1. Turn off your cell phone.
2. Process email only twice a day.
3. Go to bed early.
4. Get rid of (or at least reduce) commitments that you do out of obligation.
5. Create a weekly meal plan.
6. Automate your finances.
7. Purge as much unneeded clutter as possible.
8. Keep your paper shredder on top of your recycling bin.
9. Add items you want to a wish list as you think of them.
10. Get a label maker or write labels out by hand.
11. Set your clothes out for the next day the night before.
12. Make your lunch for the next day the night before.
13. Make time to catch up with an old friend.
14. Just say no.
15. Ask for experiences not things for your birthday and Christmas this year.
16. Tell the truth.
17. Keep your list of addresses and phone numbers up to date.
18. Consolidate debt.
19. Create an organizing system that works for you.
20. Keep a bag for garbage in your car.
21. Cary a notebook and pen with you where ever you go.
22. Unsubscribe from emails, newsletters or RSS feeds that don’t provide value anymore.
23. Apologize immediately when you realize you’ve done wrong.
24. Enjoy the present moment as much as you can.
25. Take time to really see the little things in life.
26. Reduce the amount of TV you watch.
27. Get outside.
28. Create morning, daytime, and evening routines.
29. Ask for help.
30. Do things at home as much as possible (eat, date nights, entertain etc.).
31. Don’t get caught up in other people’s drama.
32. Let go of the self-imposed need to be perfect.
33. Focus on a simple, but healthy, eating plan.
34. Share responsibilities.
35. Reduce your wardrobe to a few versatile items.
36. Be positive.
37. Start a gratitude journal.
38. Finish old tasks before taking on new ones.
39. For every new item that enters your home set two free.
40. Want what you have not what you don’t.
41. Revisit what you carry with you in your purse or wallet.
42. Focus on one thing at a time.
43. Store new garbage bags at the bottom of your garbage can.
