FRUGAL CLOTHES SHOPPING

~Frugal Seasonal Clothes shopping for the whole family~

~I started working in retail clothing when I was 20 years old (many years ago). I was a store manager by the age of 21 & learned many of the retail tricks for buying for myself on a frugal budet. Now I apply these tips to my family~

~As you know clothing is seasonal!~ Clothing stores will stock up on Summer clothes in late Spring & start to put there Summer clothes on sale in early July to August~Winter clothing will start to go on sale in January or February, although this all depends on the climate of your location~Warmer locations will hold onto their Summer items longer than colder locations & the same for colder locations~

~As long as you don't need to have all the latest trends, you can use this seasonal time clock to get great bargains on clothing for your whole family~

~For you & your husband, this will give you an opportunity to pick up great bargains especially on classic styles that are always in style~this system is a great motivation to keep your self in shape too!~

~
~Don't listen to the "Fashion Experts". For the last five years I have heard fashion experts saying capri's will be out next year & I keep buying them on sale every year & sure enough, everyone is wearing them come Spring~

~For your children, the rule of thumb is that they will gain one size in one year~now that is the rule, but there are exceptions that you will need to figure out for your own children~one year, my 5 year old gained 1 &1/2 sizes from a big growth spurt, but that is not the norm for him~

~I have used this system for many years with my children and have saved lots of money~I go into Target, Wal-Mart, Kohl's, etc during sales times & purchase one size up on clothes and shoes~

HINTS FROM THE WRITER

~Small Sprouts Logo~

~Thank you all for coming by my blog & registering to win a copy, or purchasing a copy of my new EBook "Start & Run your own online business on a frugal budget".

~Some of you are wondering what is in my book & how it will benefit you!~What kind of experience or expertise do I have to share with you?~

~First of all, let me say that one measure of success is when you start to make money~But that is only one of the benefits~

~In the forward of my EBook, I make a bold claim that I run a successful Website, Blog Site, Etsy Store & Ebay Store~Let's break that down a bit~

~Over five years ago, I started my successful Small Sprouts Store on Ebay~ I have a 100% feedback score of 355~now that just means 355 people wrote feedback, that is not the amount of actual sales I have had~ I call my Store successful as I was making money from my very first sale & have made money ever since~In recent years, I have pared down my offering on Ebay as their listing fees are rather expensive~

~Over five years ago, I started my successful Small Sprouts website~I did not start making money on my website until I was able to drive traffic and customers to it~Now, I receive hundreds of hits on my website daily~In my EBook, I give you several ways to do this including one little known secret that put me on the 1st page of Google without paying for it~

~I have only had my successful Small Sprouts Baby Etsy shop since October of 2009, but I started making money from that site right away~You have to also look at the potential for referals to you website from Etsy~

~I have only been blogging on my successful Small Sprouts Blog for 5 months & I have 88 followers, plus lots of referrals to my website & Etsy site for sales~

~My measure of success is being able to afford to stay home for my children, yet I gained so much more~
~let me show you how to do that in my EBook~

~Rachael from "Money Saving Tips For the Keeper At Home", recently reviewed my book~
"I had the opportunity to read this book and found the information to be enlightening and helpful. While I knew some of it, I didn't know all of it and have already begun putting into practice a few of her tips on my own blog. Driving traffic to your blog can be a large hurdle to overcome and Christine has some great pointers to share."

"The book is written in blog format so it is not your normal book but if you like reading blogs - it is super easy to read and follow. I would love to see the book "filled" out a little more over time but even the way it is, it is a great way to start making money straight from home!"

~When you purchase my EBook, I want to invest in your success & make myself available to your e-mail questions~ I even give you ideas on what to sell in my EBook~

FRUGAL ORGANICS

~FRUGAL ORGANICS~

~If you are not growing your own fruits & vegetables, organics is the next best thing~
~You do not have to buy everything organic~

~Not all of us can afford to go 100% organic every time we shop. The solution? Focus on those foods that come with the heaviest burden of pesticides, additives and hormones. According to the Environmental Working Group (EWG), consumers can reduce their pesticide exposure by 80% by avoiding the most contaminated fruits and vegetables and eating only the cleanest. If consumers get their USDA-recommended 5 daily servings of fruits and veggies from the 15 most contaminated, they could consume an average of 10 pesticides a day. Those who eat the 15 least contaminated conventionally grown produce ingest less than 2 pesticides daily.~

~The following is a list of foods that are most important to have Organic~

~MEAT~
Contrary to a widely reported "fact," meat typically contains less pesticide residue than plant-based foods, according to Debra Edwards, the director of EPA's Office of Pesticide Programs. But raising animals with conventional modern methods often means using hormones to speed up growth, antibiotics to resist disease on crowded feed lots, and both pesticides and chemical fertilizers to grow the grain fed to the animals. Additionally, it takes many times the water and energy to raise one meal's worth of meat than it does one meal's worth of grain.

Consumers looking to avoid meats raised with these substances can seek out certified organic meat. To meet USDA standards, this meat can come only from animals fed organic feed and given no hormones or antibiotics. Searching out cuts from grass-fed animals ensures that you're eating meat from an animal that was fed a more natural diet, and looking for a local source of meats lets you question the farmer directly about the animal's diet and the farmer's method of raising it. It cuts down on the environmental cost of transportation, too.

~MILK~
Pesticides and other man-made chemicals have been found in human breast milk, so it should come as no surprise that they have been found in dairy products, too. While any residues detected have been rare, and of low concentration, milk is of special concern because it is a staple of a child's diets.

Organic dairies cannot feed their cows with grains grown with pesticides, nor can they use antibiotics or growth hormones like rGBH or rbST. The overall impact of the herd is lessened when you choose organic milk.

~COFFEE~
Many of the beans you buy are grown in countries that don't regulate use of chemicals and pesticides. Look for the USDA Organic label to ensure you're not buying beans that have been grown or processed with the use of potentially harmful chemicals.

Go a step or two further, and look for the Fair Trade Certified label to ensure that your purchase supports farmers who are paid fairly and treated well. And look for shade-grown varieties for the trifecta: Then you know the coffee is being grown under the canopy of the rainforest, leaving those ancient trees intact, along with the wildlife -- particularly songbirds -- that call them home.

~PEACHES~
Multiple pesticides are regularly applied to these delicately skinned fruits in conventional orchards.
Can't find organic? Safer alternatives include watermelon, tangerines, oranges and grapefruit.
Thick skinned fruits & vegetables are safer.

~APPLES~
Like peaches, apples are typically grown with the use of poisons to kill a variety of pests, from fungi to insects. Scrubbing and peeling doesn't eliminate chemical residue completely, so it's best to buy organic when it comes to apples. Peeling a fruit or vegetable also strips away many of their beneficial nutrients.
Can't find organic? Safer alternatives include watermelon, bananas and tangerines.

~SWEET BELL PEPPERS~
Peppers have thin skins that don't offer much of a barrier to pesticides. They're often heavily sprayed with insecticides.
Can't find organic? Safer alternatives include green peas, broccoli and cabbage.

~CELERY~
Celery has no protective skin, which makes it almost impossible to wash off the chemicals that are used on conventional crops.
Can't find organic? Safer alternatives include broccoli, radishes and onions.

~NECTARINES~

There were 26 different types of pesticides found on tested nectarines.
Can't find organic? Safer alternatives include, watermelon, papaya and mango.

~STRAWBERRIES~

If you buy strawberries out of season, they're most likely imported from countries that use less-stringent regulations for pesticide use.
Can't find organic? Safer alternatives include blueberries, kiwi and pineapples.

~CHERRIES~

Even locally grown cherries are not safe. In fact, cherries grown in the U.S. were found to have three times more pesticide residue then imported cherries.
Can't find organic? Safer alternatives include blueberries, raspberries and cranberries.

~KALE~

Traditionally kale is known as a hardier vegetable that rarely suffers from pests and disease, but it was found to have high amounts of pesticide residue when tested this year.
Can't find organic? Safer alternatives include cabbage, asparagus and broccoli.

~LEAFY GREENS~
Leafy greens are frequently contaminated with what are considered the most potent pesticides used on food.
Can't find organic? Safer alternatives include cabbage, cauliflower and Brussels sprouts.

~GRAPES~

Imported grapes run a much greater risk of contamination than those grown domestically. Vineyards can be sprayed with different pesticides during different growth periods of the grape, and no amount of washing or peeling will eliminate contamination because of the grape's thin skin.
Can't find organic? Safer alternatives include blueberries, kiwi and raspberries.

~CARROTS~
In Europe pesticides commonly used on carrots, parsnips and onions will be banned within the next decade. The U.S. has yet to catch up with its European counterparts, so organic is the way to go with carrots.
Can't find organic? At least be sure to scrub and peel them. Safer carrot alternatives include sweet corn, sweet peas and broccoli.

~PEARS~As insects become more resilient to the pesticides used on pears, more and more chemicals are used. The safest bet is to go organic.
Can't find organic? Safer alternatives include grapefruit, honeydew mellon and mangos.

~POTATOES~
America's popular spud appeared on the previous dirty dozen list, although it has slipped off the most current version. However, EWG analyst Chris Campbell points out that potatoes are now "just off the list," so you should still try to buy organic when possible. Potatoes also get the double whammy of fungicides added to the soil for growing.
Can't find organic? Safer alternatives include eggplant, cabbage and earthy mushrooms.

~TOMATOES~
In a change that surprises some, tomatoes have moved from the previous dirty dozen list to the EWG's most recent "clean" list of safest conventional produce. According to Chris Campbell, the researchers aren't sure exactly why this is the case. "It could be any number of reasons," Campbell told TDG. "It could be increasing awareness, better washing, substitution with better pesticides, changes in weather patterns or something else."
It's still true that the thin skin of tomatoes can allow pesticides to enter the fruit, so it's always a good idea to buy organic when possible, even if the popular food is no longer among the worst actors.
Can't find organic? You may want to consider peas, broccoli and asparagus.

~The following is a list that you do not have to buy organic~

~Onions, Avocado, Sweet corn on the cob, Pineapple, Mango, Asparagus, Sweet peas, Kiwi, Cabbage, Eggplant, Papaya, Watermelon, Broccoli & Sweet potatoe.~

~CASTOR OIL~BACK TO THE BASICS~

~CASTOR OIL~

~This is the first post of what I am calling my "Back to the basics" series.~

~I have a real desire to get "back to the basics"~How did our Grandparents & Great Grandparents live~
~Their ways were so much simpler than ours~frugal~basic~much more self-sufficient than we are~

~Castor oil is a vegetable oil obtained from the castor bean~

~Wrinkle Treatment & cleansing~
Castor oil is a natural emollient that penetrates the skin and helps stimulate the production of collagen and elastin which can soften and hydrate the skin. Therefore, castor oil is a wonderful natural treatment for wrinkles since it restores and rejuvenates skin's natural youthful appearance by making skin smoother, softer and pliant. Dip a small cotton ball into pure Castor oil and apply it on wrinkled skin before going to bed. Use only a small amount of oil when applying it to the skin near the eyes. For great cleansing tips, go to: http://www.theoilcleansingmethod.com/ .

~The Oil that heals~
~Castor Oil Pack Instructions~
(excerpt from The Oil That Heals by William A. McGarey, M.D.)

~Prepare a flannel cloth which is two or three thicknesses when folded and which measures about eight inches in width and ten to twelve inches in length after it is folded. This is the size needed for abdominal application - other areas may need a different size pack, as seems applicable. Pour castor oil into a pan and soak the cloth in the oil.~

~Wring out the cloth so that it is wet but not drippy with the castor oil (or simply pour castor oil onto the pack so it is soaked). Apply the cloth to the area which needs treatment. Most often, the pack should be placed so it covers the area of the liver.~

~Protection against soiling bed clothing can be made by putting a sheet underneath the body. Then a plastic covering should be applied over the soaked flannel cloth. On top of the plastic, place a heating pad and turn it up to "medium" to begin, then to "high" if the body tolerates it. It helps to wrap a large towel around the body to hold the pack snugly in place, using large safety pins on the towel. The pack should remain in place between an hour to an hour and a half.~

~The skin should be cleaned afterward, by using water which is prepared as follows: to a quart of water, add two teaspoons of baking soda. Use this to cleanse the abdomen. Keep the flannel pack wrapped in plastic for future use. It need not be discarded after one application, but can usually be used many times.~
~Note: Always use a high-quality, cold-pressed castor oil, available in health food stores.~

~More Benefits & Uses Of Castor Oil ~

Castor oil proves to be extremely beneficial for those who have very thin eyelashes and eyebrows. All they have to do is dab on some castor oil on the lashes and brows every night, before going to bed.

The oil serves as a laxative and thus, is good for those who are suffering from the problem of constipation. At the same time, it also benefits people troubled by irritable bowel syndrome.

In case you are suffering from any digestive problems caused by bacterial overgrowth, castor oil will prove to be the best remedy, owing to its antibacterial, antiviral and anti fungal properties.

Castor oil contains, rather is the only known source of, the valuable unsaturated fatty acid ricinoleic acid. The fatty acid is known for its extraordinary healing abilities.

Castor oil, by exerting a positive influence on the thymus gland and lymphatic tissue, can help improve the flow of lymph fluid. This, in turn, treats swollen lymph nodes and lessens fatigue and depression.

When applied topically (by massaging on the affected area), the oil can prove beneficial for people suffering from rheumatism, arthritis, gout and other painful joint conditions.

Since it contains undecylenic acid, which has germ-killing and disinfectant properties, castor oil can help treat skin ulcers and kill the fungi found around fingernails and toenails.

Using hair care products that contain castor oil can help keep dandruff at bay. You can also massage the oil into the scalp, leave it overnight and wash hair the next morning, to get rid of dandruff.

You can treat the problem of calluses on the feet, by applying castor oil topically on the affected area. Before this, soak your feet in Epsom salts water, speeding up the healing process.

If you feel that your hair has become too coarse and dull, try using castor oil as a conditioner. All you have to do is massage the oil onto your scalp, leave it for one hour and then wash off.

The oil works great as a moisturizer. Especially in the winter season, using it will prevent your skin from drying up and getting white patches. Just massage your body with it and then take a hot shower.

If you have been suffering from the problem of dry skin on the soles of your feet or cracked ankles, castor oil would prove useful. Massage the area with the oil and then soak it in hot water. Your skin will begin to soften.
